Traditional Chinese Medicine (CM) is a complete medical system that has been used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses for more than 2,000 years. In contrast to modern medicine (MM), the treatments of CM are always tailored to the individual, and in response to the whole person’s health, not one disease or symptom. Practitioners diagnose on the basis of not only a medical history and physical observations – including looking at someone's skin, taking their pulse, and checking the condition and colour of their tongues – but also on answers to questions about how their patient is feeling. CM became increasingly popular in the UK since its introduction into the West in the 1970s.
