Repairing shower handles is not only a simple home repair but also a very quick and easy one. Here are the steps you'll need to follow in order to be successful in fixing up your broken shower handle. There are two basic types of shower handles the cylinder and the lever. So depending on what you have in your bathroom, you'll be able to figure out which one is broken. Here's how it works. This kind of handle has a round head with a socket for the stem to screw into. They are held into place with set screws that are screwed into the hole in the stem. If the handle is difficult to move or doesn't seem to be working at all, then there's a good chance you'll find some rust here. In order to rectify this problem, turn off the water supply and remove the handle. Use a toothbrush dipped in some rubbing alcohol to brush away the rust. You may also need a small screwdriver to pry it off. Replace the handle and turn on the water supply again. If your handle is broken, then you'll have to remove it from the stem but first make sure that there's no water running anywhere because if you choose to do this with the water on, you might end up flooding your bathroom. If that happens, then you'll have a bigger problem to solve because the water in any amount always needs to be dealt with swiftly and efficiently. This is how the handle looks when it's broken. The screw is still attached and can only be taken out once the handle has been removed from the stem. Insert the screwdriver into the hole on the top of the handle and turn it counter-clockwise in order to loosen it from its place.
